Thank you for your help in sending our Executive Chef, Christopher Ennew to the 10th annual KitchenAid Culinary Showdown in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Chef Christopher raised just over $8,000 and was able to not only compete in the showdown but also bring a guest, a good friend with stage 4 breast cancer.
The showdown was hosted by actor Dean McDermott and offered foodies the opportunity to cook alongside a lineup of top Canadian chefs, including Mark McEwan, Chuck Huges, Lynn Crawford, Vikram Vij and Corbin Tomaszeski. The top 50 fundraisers got the opportunity to participate, splitting into 5 teams headed by each of the chefs. Chef Christopher was recruited to Lynn Crawford's team, best known for her appearance on the Food Network's hit show Restaurant Makeover.
The day started out with some lessons from the celebrity chefs, the 50 foodies were coached about various topics from knife techniques to ingredient picking. In the evening the real showdown began, each team had to create an appetizer, an entree and a dessert. For every course, the table had ingredients on them which you could use but also had a mystery basket of items that you had to use.
In the end, Chef Christopher's team ended up coming second, falling only short to Mark McEwan. But it wasn't the competition that left an impact on the participants, "It was the most electrifying room I have ever been in," recalls Chef Christopher. "The emotional stories being passed around that day would break your heart. I'm already planning my fundraising so that I can attend next year, it was a great event."
