Switching over to a natural deodorant is a bit of a process, but in the long run it is definitely worth it in every sense. It is better for your body, your skin and the environment. Skin is the largest organ of the body and it absorbs everything that you put on it, including your deodorant. Most commercial deodorants are actually anti-perspirants which stop you from sweating all together and are harmful to the body.
Your body sweats for a reason- it purges toxins and works as a temperature regulating system for the body. When you apply an anti-perspirant you are preventing your body form doing what it needs to do, and if the toxins aren’t able to escape via sweating, they will find another way. Most anti-perspirants contain aluminum which has been linked to Alzheimer’s and breast cancer. These chemical-laden deodorants also clog pores; can cause irritation and messes with the body’s bacteria and cooling system, so why do we use them?
There are a few things to know before you make the change to a natural deodorant. First and foremost, remember that it is a deodorant and not an anti-perspirant. You will still sweat, but that’s not a bad thing- and you won’t smell! These eco and body-friendly deodorants work by killing bad bacteria and neutralizing odor, all while moisturizing the delicate armpit skin. Many natural deodorants also contain baking soda which is naturally absorbent. Ste. Anne’s offers two different natural deodorants, one with baking soda, and another without the baking soda, for more sensitive skins. Our deodorants come in a little jar, as opposed to the traditional stick, which is actually better for avoiding bacteria. This way you apply the deodorant with clean fingers, instead of repeatedly putting bacteria on the stick and the stick back on your body. Natural deodorants don’t block pores, so that good bacteria keep working, meaning less odor even when you’re not wearing any deodorant.
Deodorant, just like skin care, is not one-size-fits-all, and unfortunately it can be quite the trial and error process. It takes about 21 days for your skin to go through a full skin cycle, so I do recommend trying all skin and body care products for a few weeks before making a concrete decision. Natural deodorants also contain plant-based moisturizers that treat your underarms like the delicate skin they are. Ingredients like shea butter, olive oil and mineral-rich clay can actually improve the condition of your pits, leaving them smooth and less prone to irritation. An irritation-free armpit results in a closer (and longer-lasting) shave.
I challenge you to make the change for a healthier and happier body!
